Description
TULANE NEUROLOGY The Neurology section plays an integral role in the education of medical students and residents, and provides comprehensive care to children with all types of neurological disorders. All referrals are welcome, but specific conditions that especially warrant referral include: suspected/known seizures including epilepsy or other paroxysmal events, developmental delay including Autism, migraines or other headaches, abnormal movements such as tics, ADHD or other learning disabilities, sleep disorders, weakness or sensory abnormalities, and many others. Available treatment options include ketogenic diet in conjunction with Pediatric Gastroenterology, Vagal Nerve Simulator and Baclofen pumps in conjunction with Pediatric Neurosurgery, and inpatient Video EEG monitoring for evaluation for epilepsy surgery or to clarify etiology for paroxysmal events. Stephen Nelson, MD, PhD Dr. Nelson joined the faculty at Tulane University School of Medicine full-time in 2014 as Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, although he has worked part-time there as a Pediatric Neurologist since 2007. He is board-certified in both Pediatrics and Child Neurology. He is the Director of Pediatric Neurology and Neurodiagnostics, and performs both inpatient and outpatient evaluations, in addition to reading of EEGs. He not only runs a very busy clinical service, but also is heavily involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows as the Clerkship Director for Pediatric Neurology. He also serves as a reviewer and editor for multiple medical journals, and is involved in multiple research projects. He has extensive expert witness experience, both for plaintiff and defense, to include medical malpractice, criminal, personal injury, and others. Dr. Nelson completed his PhD in Biomedical Sciences at University of California, Riverside followed by in his MD at University of California, San Diego. He then completed his Pediatric residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and then his Child Neurology residency at Stanford. He served on active duty in the US Air Force from 2000-2013, most recently at Walter Reed and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, where he was the Program Director for the Child Neurology Fellowship, and the Director of Child Neurology for the medical school. http://www.childneurologyconsulting.com/ http://www2.tulane.edu/som/departments/neurology/people/faculty/stephen-nelson.cfm http://tulanelakeside.com/physicians/profile/Stephen-Nelson-MD-PhD https://www2.tulane.edu/som/departments/pediatrics/Patient-Care/neurology-peds.cfm http://www.vitals.com/doctors/Dr_Stephen_L_Nelson.html#ixzz3Tq2UBmhY
