Capt. Messer-Bookman has worked as a maritime educator since 1993, when she opened her own USCG license preparation school in Sausalito, CA, while attending law school. In 1995 she joined the professoriate at California Maritime Academy and taught various subjects there until she retired in 2018. She holds a USCG unlimited tonnage Master's license, upon oceans, the highest commercial maritime license available. She has over 300,000 miles at sea as a ship's officer. Capt. Messer-Bookman has served as a maritime expert witness and consultant since 1998, and has She has authored three books. Noticing an almost universal lack of knowledge about the casualties that shape the commercial maritime world, Capt. Messer-Bookman wanted to offer a casualty seminar to senior cadets at the Academy. Finding no suitable text, Capt. Messer-Bookman used a sabbatical period to write one."Maritime Casualties: Causes and Consequences" was published in 2015 and is now the text used for the maritime casualty seminar class that she offered for the first time in 2017.
